Hi,:D
I was just wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the Golite Hex 3 tent/shelter.
And what your thoughts were on them as I may be thinking about buying one if I can get a nest inner to go with it?
Any thoughts???

Like Gorilla said there's plenty here on the Hex 3 already.

Most of those who have a Hex 3 rave about them. My experience was not so great, in that my one leaked badly. The tents are meant to be stitched together with a special thread that swells when wet, thus sealing the seams and keeping the rain out. My one failed to work that way, but others here have not had a problem.

Golite are good company though and sorted me out a new tent when i told them of my problems with the Hex 3. I can't fault their customer service.

It may be worth waiting a while before you purchase, as Golite are bringing out a new range in the spring. My guess is that this winter will see some hefty discounts on the Hex 3.

Fantastic tent, as simple as that:)

Bit of a thread hijack, dont want to go off on a tangent, however...

Ive just ordered one of these from Harpers ferry stateside. The tent with the inner nest cost me £144.00 which sounded like great deal.
However, got a letter from Parcel force this morning stating I had to pay;
£8.00 Clearance fee
£19.85 Import duty
£32.42 VAT
Which if you add to the $42.00 I paid USPS to deliver to the UK, I am paying circa $170.00 just to have the thing delivered!!

I realise theres always a risk of this happening, but still...........OUCH.

Ive never actually seen one in the flesh, so to speak.....Im half thinking of telling Parcel force where to go, and sending it back. They are holding it at their depot.

Is this tent worth £220.00+?

If you think about the equivalent price of the alternatives, then it's still good value.
Although your maths seems a little suspect ;)
144+8+20+32+42 = 246 USD which is about £123 - a bargain!

Note the dollars and pound signs.....Ok, closer to $160.00 than $170.00

Anyway, I bought it. Hope its worth it.

Bummer. Pity the firm didn't do what Golite did for me: put the value on the customs declaration as $20.

A good friend in the States gets my gear, and posts it on to me, very useful at times:cool:

The tent is a cracker, and very versatile

Extend the pole to its max, and it raises the tent 2 or 3 inches off the ground; this is still lower than the bathtub groundsheet of the Nest, but allows air to circulate.

Lower the pole a little, and you seat the tent 'on the ground', very good in high wind or snow conditions.

Leave the pole at home and pitch the tent hung from a line of paracord between a couple of trees (loop is at the top of the tent for this)

In warm summer months, just take the nest on its own and use as a bug proof shelter

Rik, I have one question about pitching the hex. Now, I've had mine a while and still can't figure out how to pitch it right first time. I always end up jigging the pegs around a bit, which is a real pain in the... it's a pain, trust me!

So, how do you do it? Do you peg the edges out, then put the pole in, or do you peg say three points out, pole in and then peg the other three points? I really want an effective way of doing this first time as I love this tent but feel that this is the only thing letting it down.

Well, I hope I get lucky with the 2nd one. It's green instead of bright orange, so that a bonus anyway. It's such a spacious and light tent. I so, so, want it to be alright this time.

By the way Rik, did you use any seam sealant on yours, or does the hydophilic thread do the job without assitance on yours.

Love my hex 3 there's so much room in it it's sheer luxury for one and still packs small.

You can hang the thing off stuff if you dont want the hassle of a pole inside, or if you want hang it off an external bipod arrangement which makes it feel even bigger inside.

The only downside is that there is'nt a porch, but you can move the tub away from the door area if you need to store wetstuff. personally I rig an old hennessey fly to form a canopy porch and guy it out with a walking pole or canoe paddle.

and yes they are worth the dosh

With the nest insert, the job is done for you, pitch that first and the tent just sits on top; without the insert it takes a bit of juggling as you said.

Never used sealent and its not leaked to date

Can't wait to see the new 2008 Shangri-La range, different sizes will be available, and the 8 man will only weigh 6lbs :)

I have a question for people who have this tent...

I realise its not designed for a folding firebox. But if you can use a firebox in the moskoselkatan/Tentipi nylon ones. Why not the Hex?
Surely they are as flammable as the Hex?

The hex is made of nylon impregnated with silicone. Consequently it's highly inflammable. I'd be very careful about using a naked flame in one.

Just been chasing to try and get one of the Nests for myself. One of the retailers has suggested that Golite have been bought by Timberland, who are looking to drop the tent products.

Hope its not true as I really was interested in getting one of these.

--------------EDIT--------------
Found this press release just now: http://www.outdoorindustry.org/media.outdoor.php?news_id=3137

Suggests that there replacing the Hex with a Shangrila series.
