etaproof vs ventile or =??

hi guys
im new to this kommunity however im not from UK neither other island...well im from big island - europe
im from slovakia -east part-well behind my home beautiful carpatian mountains..

id like to ask couse id like to buy myself a christmas present
ventile , or etaproof jacket

i think ventile and etaproof is 100% the same...only difference is etaproof is made by stotz fabrics in switzerland and ventile by ventile.. in UK
so performance and durability should be exatly the same
so im asking u guys are those two materials the same exept the name??

Yep you're right! Stotz makes it on a license from talbot weaving (who makes the ventile). (according to addyb )

This is true Swede, except for one small difference. Etaproof comes factory proofed with a DWR whereas Ventile does not. Now, the proofing of Ventile/Etaproof is something of a debate because some feel that proofing the fabric diminishes its fibre swelling or "balloon" properties and others do not. But like most things in life, its up to the user to decide.

ure right exept there is company which use etaproof in organic bases so there sholudnt be any proofing-klattermusen.
im thinkin about their etaproof garmet ...but not really earthy prices....

DWR treatments - so I have heard tell - started life as non slip treatments so that when manufacturers were laying out multiple layers of fabric on the cutting tables they would not bind on each other and ruck up causing either cutting errors or taking a lot of time to sort out each layer.
The basic treatment was a silicone spray. This was hard to remove from the finished garment so was promoted as an extra feature!
Peolple are now used to having DWR and think they are being short changed if the magic letters are not in the features list...
This could of course be an Urban Myth for the outdoors - but I have it on the BEST authority!

Klättermusen is expensive, but well worth your had earned cash. Everthing I've got from them is top notch.

That's true Klattermusen is very expensive, but from what I've seen on their website they really know how to make a good piece of kit. If I could afford it, I'd definately make a purchase. Or two. Or three. Or heck, maybe even the entire catalogue. *cough cough*

But getting back to the topic at hand....

John, you're right when you talk about being short changed by DWR's and honestly, I've felt that way too on occasion. But there are some types of garments that need a DWR to function properly and the biggest of them all is Gore-Tex. If you want your WPB (waterproof breathable) garment to breathe and not trap all your body vapour as if you were wearing saran wrap, you have to proof the stuff. Without a DWR, Gore-Tex is next to useless. And the same goes for soft-shell garments. But with naturals, its a point of debate.....

i heard that they have moved part of production in china??
seems that these days there is almost nobody who doesnt produce in china...

but back to ventile and etaprof...
ventile should be without proofing ..definitely...or not??

Two jackets, a pair of pants, and a backpack. I think it's only the backpacks that are made in china, the clothing is made in balticum I think, at least that was the story a couple of years ago.

may i ask what kind of jackets and pants are what is your experiences with those??

The jackets are older models, called Grim and Njal. Grim is a e-vent alpine climbing jacket, cut really short as it is desiged to be used with high bibs and climbing harness. The hood is one of the best I've ever used, it quite smililar to the hoods on all their e-vent jackets. Very nice pockets too. Njal is a eta-proof anorak. Brilliant, but it is a tad short. It is primarly a three season jacket. Doesn't provide enough protection for the face for winter. It is however very windproof, and very nicely cut.

Pants were gleipner, eta-proof pants. Not much to say really, the get wet faster then the jacket. Especially since I sit on my knees a lot.

no more e-vent material they swiched into own material called cutan strech....
u said u have njal anorak made in etaproof ...so how is it against rain ..is it showerproof.??
and i supose u can wear it almost everywhere accept heavy rains...
and should be windproof..

I'd say that basically anything made from Ventile or some other natural tightly woven fabric is showerproof. I bought a Fjallraven G-1000 anorak when I was over in Munich this past summer and from my experience, it quite comparable to Ventile. But showerproof does not mean waterproof. The stuff will keep you dry in horrible rain usually long enough for you to hunker down and find or build a shelter. However, if you layer yourself accodingly you should be fine. Just remember: Generations of climbers and outdoor inclined people before us made do with Ventile and the like for many years before the advent of Gore-Tex and did just fine.

I'll take the chance to ask a ventile question off the back of this thread -

I'm trying to give myself another reason/excuse to get a ventile jacket from SASS and was wondering if the wind stopping properties of the fabric would be suitable for motorcycle use?

I've got a short leather jacket, and was thinking wearing the ventile on top to block the wind, and keep me dry in light rain. I think I read ventile was used by fighter pilots, so i'm guessing it would shrug off anything encountered on a short bike trip.

Just ask the company who's sell the stuff, if they don't know, ask them to ask the distributor.
