Ray Mears books?

Comtemplating asking Santa for a few Ray Mears books this Xmas


I've noticed on Amazon that the gentleman has few books out there and allot of them look/read alike. Don't want to chance buying a few and have them being pretty much identical.

Anyone have any of the Ray Mears books?

Personally I like the small handbook verison of bushcraft, but If I had the chance I would love to have the largger photo one. If you have the cash for it, go ahead and get the large "bushcraft" book.

I have got 4,

Outdoor Survival Handbook - Interesting but he has updated much of the advice, eg waterstones have replaced oilstones for him

Bushcraft (Large and small) - Current information, the larger one does have more pictures etc.

Bushcraft Survival - A Behind the scenes look at some of his TV programmes.

Real Heros of Telemark - Book of TV Series

Yes there is some overlap and if you were just to buy one I would go for the full version of "Bushcraft" but all are good for a cold winter night with a cup of coffee or a glass of malt

PS I take essential bushcraft to camp with me but rarely get it out

there is a lot of confusion regarding the books authored by Ray mears, much of this stems from the fact that they all have similar names and some of them have been republished several times under slightly different names.

thus far there are ten books that I am aware of which where published in the following order:

(some pictures may have been moved, removed or added with a different title and cover art in some cases it is simply a different format such as a large coffee table size or handbook size version of the same book)


the most difficult book to obtain is the first on the list in green (Survival Handbook: Practical Guide to Woodcraft and Woodlore ISBN 0946609888), all others are easily available

if you get one of the orange titles and one of the blue titles plus if you are determined the title marked in green, you will have all you require from Mr Mears offerings

other titles such as Ray Mears' World of Survival: As Seen on TV, and The Real Heroes of Telemark are more accompaniments to their corresponding TV series than serious instructional manuals

I hope this makes things a little clearer, please let me know if there is an error in the list so that I may correct it.

Top post Stuart, and I couldn't agree more with your reasoning on only needing the 3 books. I have extreme survival out from the library, and though it is quite an interesting read I wouldn't go out and buy it.

Maybe though somebody could tell me how I go about making a small tinder box from an old battery, as seen in the extreme survival book, without blowing my eyebrows off!

I got given a signed copy of Heroes of Telemark for my birthday to replace my rather dog eared original copy.

It's not so much a survival book more of a History book with some bushcraft thrown in.

But to share my good fortune, PM me your address and I'll send you my dog eared copy.

You should always give a book rather than lend one!

you can get them signed off ray's site
don't fall for the one's on e bay i've seen them go for more
than what ray sells them for and it might not be signed by him!

I have bought "ray mears essential bushcraft" and the dvds of bushcraft survival series 1 and 2 off ammazonuk and they are BRILLIANT

I would recomend them to anyone with even a slight intrest in bushcraft as they are very interesting and inspiring

there are 2 mears books and one of them is a pocket size of "bushcraft" called "essential bushcraft, so buy the other 2

I've got Essential Bushcraft and Real Heroes of Telemark signed by the man himself at Telemark book signing when they came out.

Essential Bushcraft is one of most referred to books.
