Upon rewatching it I felt like it was a predecessor to First Blood. Story is very similar.

But then again , that maybe my fertile imagination.
I think Dune is a reimagining of Lawrence of Arabia..

More a desert based tribal people being recruited by a single figure that culturally aligns to them ( and as such is considered as different to his own ) to take a side and act as one in a greater war.

Indeed, one of the many layers it contains, Herbert himself spoke that the books are about the dangers of hero worship. The concept of the Butlerian jihad is interesting again these days.
