The French seem to love dug shite on the pavement!
I've lived over here for a loooooong time.

There used to be a policy in Paris of "make your dog use the gutter", with little pictures spray-painted on the pavement. The first fully formed and grammatically correct phrase in French that my son uttered was the equivalent of "there's dog poo everywhere around here!"

Between me moving away in 2005 and coming back in 2012 this has changed to a "pick it up and bin it" policy.

There are, of course, people who don't respect that (and I've scared the owner of an Alsatian who brought it to **** outside my gate, so he doesn't do that any more), but the pavements are much, much cleaner that they were in the 90's and 00's.

Unfortunately a lot of people see litter, dog waste and dumped furniture etc as the councils issue.
Round here much of the litter is due to the council. We're in a windy, wild area and the refuse is put out in plastic sacks the night before and recycling in light plastic bags and crates, often away from your home.

The results is animals ripping open refuse and fairly often stuff blowing all over the place. Raising the issue is met by indifference and sometimes resentment.

Outside of places like this site, most people just don't seem to care about the environment so don't seem anything about littering, not picking up after their dog or even controlling their dogs.

Tempting to try to not stray into politics..

There are I think if you look around the world , look at our history , previous experiences things that can be identified as Good Ideas vs Bad Ideas , and those ideas form part of whatever culture a society is based upon.
Part of different cultures are hopefully shared and those cultures share ideals with our own.

I think someone touched upon it earlier - we seem to be ( or a growing element of population ) in a current culture of 'self' - putting oneself first instead of common ideals and good/bad ideas.

Not sure how we got here but hope we see sense soon.
I don't think its just generational however.

## edit - I do wonder if the way to rebuild a counter culture is to have some sort of public service for a few months at the end of the schooling pipeline - something that invokes and reconnects a new generation of people each and every year to giving a s##t about their country. But I know the naysayers will suggest that whilst they may tolerate and do - they won't actually 'buy in' to the ethos. To which my response would be - what do you suggest>? ##

I don’t know if it’s that much different. Streets years ago were a pig sty, look at some of the footage from older films/tv you’ll see loads of rubbish, crap everywhere, the evolution of disco came from the need to breakdance round the dog turds in the street.

People have been complaining about the youth of today for years - like gaining a fear of heights and becoming a grumpy aul’ get, whinging about the youth of today comes to us all. Particularly noticeable is rubbish these days because as things become cleaner the filthy parts are more prominent, a driver for complaint.

Just to be clear - I'm not saying its the youth - I'm suggesting a starting point for change. Because its difficult to get Adults to do jack-all unless there is a threat of eventual force ( we can try that way if you like. )

I see plenty of older people litter , not pick up dog **** , throw cig butts from car windows , leave frankly a shitshow on their front garden in plain sight.

So no , its not JUST the youths or at all.
Its people that think these behaviours are their right and that it affects no one else.

It's a good idea but based on what I've heard and read many teachers in schools these days seem to be doing the opposite and teaching kids and teens that our country is evil and should be hated.

Hmm. I think perhaps this will depend on where you consume your media.

There are thousands of teachers out there doing their very best in very challenging circumstances. My experience of teaching is that the parents whose children could do no wrong were the issue - can't enforce discipline at school if the parents come in and start abusing teachers for doing so. I once had a parent come in and threaten me and my colleague because we confiscated his son's cocaine, which had been given to them by the parent.

Two of my daughters are teachers, both working with children outside of the norm. One with extreme cases. It is difficult to comment upon the issues that they face without becoming political (Not necessarily anti-governmental.)

They have both found themselves in the position that they are the first authority that has ever said “No”. The poor child is completely bewildered and usually angered by this.
What this presages for future conformance and social behaviour is difficult to exaggerate.

"Always following the route of least resistance"

I'm sorry that whatever event it was in life, that has given you this jaded outlook and the nerve to mention it on this particular forum.

Path of least resistance, Indeed!

A generalisation. Doesn't apply to everyone. Most people want an easy, trouble free life. Some of us, well... not so much.

I don't know what you mean regarding saying it on this forum. People on this forum generally do what they do because they choose to... they enjoy what they do. If you enjoy something, its not exactly hard mode is it?

Everybody's enjoying a good moan.

Everybody always has. Guess it’s our turn:

“What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?” – Plato

But would that change to which Government is in power?

No, not aimed at anyone nor your commentary in particular. More a general commentary on the commentary, actually id tend to agree with the point that it’s more about selfishness than age. Selfishness and a sense of entitlement.
I was given out too a little while ago while on holiday because I had (inadvertently I must add) somehow interfered with some donkey faced cretins insta moment. A cretin who then left a post photo mess behind him including leaving lying at his backside on the banks of a river the “props” he’d picked up from a nearby cafe table.

Sorry Ceeg but I think Hillbill is sadly right. Folk are generally followers of the herd, and being a bit lazy will take the easiest option if they think they can get away with it because others apparently do.
I think that probably everybody on this forum are the outliers because we are prepared to think and act outside the box.
