It’s anyone here using Duck Duck Go?

I have just done a superficial search:

Where is the Wurkkos manufactured?

DDG showed me many examples and reviewers of their products. The only geographical information was that it is manufactured at the same factory as the Sofin products.

When I made exactly the same search in Google it showed “China” as the third argument in the first page.

I swapped to DDC from Google as my default browser when it became flooded with Temu advertisements. I know that I must be buying stuff from them via other traders and brands but I am trying hard not to deal with them.

ETA I am aware of the origins of DDC.

Don't thinks so - if you ask for Sofirn manufacture it comes up with Shenzhen. I have been using DDG for years now and, although it does come up with different results than Google, it usually delivers what I want. If I really want a broad search of the internet I use ChatGPT.

I use DDG for similar reasons and generally find it quite accurate. Only time I see google bettering it is for some very specific techie questions. I tried that search, I did get various shopping sites (but no ads) including the main site containing contact info. The DDG ai assisted search answered directly and correctly.
I’d stick with it, google is a pox.

I doubt that it is censored, but I expect that it is using a different search methodology.

I use DDG for some things and Google for others. I regularly get different results and different result orders between the two. In this case, Google gives significantly more pertinent results than DDG, regardless of how the search is phrased.

In this case, as you say, with the wording you used, I don't get DDG to say they are made in China. On the other hand, "where are Wurkkos torches made?" gives a third hit of https://www.trademarkelite.com/uk/trademark/trademark-detail/UK00918252574/Wurkkos
which is clear that they are from Shenzen, China.
But "where are Wurkkos flashlights made?" gives different results that do not contain the UK trademark page.

Ditto on the DDG AI assistant, it states China very quickly.

This. I use both, Google can be used in Incogneto mode but I’m not sure it’s without any kind of record. DDG is really good but I rarely use the search function, Google rules for searches. I can use it with a VPN if I’m dealing with the likes or Aliexpress or any companies I don’t want to have data tracked back to.

The DDG email address works brilliantly, removes trackers etc and hides your personal email.

FWIW, I very rarely get Temu pop-ups or inclusion in shopping searches even in Google Search. I disallowed Google to allow Temu links to be opened, it seems to have slowed the bombardment. Adblock is also invaluable once the recipe, news story etc has been found I open the page in Safari and all the ads are gone.

I use Duck duck go and have done for years. The main thing is that it does not track you, store your browsing history or data rape you at every oppertunity. I use it in conjunction with a free VPN from proton mail which is also an end to end encrypted email.
Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean you are not being followed. Unknown hippy wit. xxxxxx

ps I also use a browser called brave that allows add free you tube. Private windows and private window in Tor ( the deeeeeeep ddark dangerous web) which is in reality simply a tool for anonymity. I use Duck duck go as a search engine with these. All my online activities are, be design, google free.

I tried the same search expression in both DuckDuckGo and Google...

Google came up with a Reddit page stating that Wurkoss torches are made in the Sofirn factory in Shenzhen.

DuckDuckGo gave me over two pages of results pointing straight to Wutkoss's website and then near the bottom of page three I saw this:

The difference is that Google finds you the information it thinks you want, as well as the information it wants you to have for its own commercial reasons.

DuckDuckGo just serves you the most relevant results based on the search term in order that you can find the information within the linked results, without it applying much additional algorithmic logic to it. Often, poor site SEO means that what you’re looking for might not be shown in the meta description text that you see on the DDG results page, and you need to click through.

This is how ChatGPT answers the question:

<It appears Wurkkos is based in China. Their address is listed as No.1 Qinglin Industrial Center, Guanlan Street, Longhua New District in China. Wurkkos official website

I couldn’t find a definitive source publicly confirming which factory or city does the manufacturing (beyond that address), but many in the flashlight enthusiast community believe that Sofirn (another Chinese brand) acts as a contract manufacturer for Wurkkos.>

It's so much easier than trolling through search results yourself :)

When I’m looking for kit or a review of kit, I often find links to BcUK including the post that prompted my search.

" in the flashlight enthusiast community" I didn't know there was such a thing, until I saw the discussion on flashlight batteries today........I suppose its a version of the oil lamp /knife/stove & pot/weight saving/kit addiction that we all suffer from!

Startpage user here. It's basically a front-end to the Google search engine.

I think using DDG successfully might be an art, and I haven't got the hang of it. I gave up with it years ago.

My wife uses it for more or less all her searching. Occasionally she'll ask me to do a search for her when she isn't getting anywhere but it's rare for me to ask her, so I guess Startpage suits me better.

Ahem, yes.

There is/was also Candlepower Forums which is less active now, but BLF is very active. If you have a browse you’ll see this is a mile off from fettling an old lamp or stove.

BLF has cost me a small fortune over the years :D
