Paramo Poncho!

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Sorry, just seen it's only windproof with analogy on the hood. Shame as it might have been good with analogy.

I have been wondering about getting one of those, I favour a cotton canvas jacket in the woods which is fine in a shower or light rain, but I have been thinking about getting a poncho to carry to throw on if it’s heavier rain.

I have been looking at the paramo and the Fjallraven ones, @Paul_B did you get the paramo one in the end?

I am tempted by the hilltrek ventile but not sure on price or ventile as a poncho tbh

I bought one of these recently but due to all the nice weather we’ve had this year I still haven’t had a chance to try it out in the rain yet. I’ll give you an update as soon I do though. The link below gives my initial impressions if that is of any help in the meantime.

Thanks that’s great, I am looking for something I can throw over a coat and take off again when the rain stops. What does it pack down like?

The material is fairly thin and when folding it up I can tell it would be easy to squash down small if necessary. It doesn’t come with its own stuff sack included though so you will need to find one yourself. I keep mine in a spare DD Tarps stuff sack which at 7 litres is quite large and probably about four times bigger than necessary (handy for lazy people like me who can never be bothered squashing things down into a tiny little bag while out in the field).

I found this photo on the Paramo website:

Good news! There is rain forecast for this weekend so I will make a point of taking the Paramo poncho out instead of a raincoat and brolly. :D

It is soft and quiet. I didn’t notice at first but when I took it to the shop to to get the back shortened the lady remarked how lovely and soft the material feels. She’s right too. It’s so soft to the touch it almost feels a bit like silk.

From the website:
  • Ease of carrying due to lightweight windproof construction which packs into the Poncho’s internal pocket

Hooray! Report back please,

Sorry. No luck today I'm afraid. :(

There was some light rain this morning but by the time I went out it was a nice sunny afternoon. :D

Still, this is Britain. One of the wettest countries in the world and we're heading into autumn/winter so no doubt there will be plenty of opportunities to test the poncho out before long. I'll report back and let you know how I get on with it as soon as it happens.
