Hello All, I am new here and I am.very interested in walks and doing a spot of metal detecting. I enjoy keeping fit and am looking to start discussions on things I have found. Hopefully to gain insight from people with expertise on this site.

Hi welcome, I'm new here too, also interested in metal detecting, hoping to buy one soon. I studied Archaelogy when I was younger, amongst other things. Look forward to hearing about some of your finds!

Thank you for your message. I have actually found some very interesting old looking set of 4 keys. If possible could I send you photos and details of them and get your advice on whether they are actually as old as they look and in turn if they are of any value? If so I can send you my email as I can't upload photos on here. Many Thanks

Sure, I'm not a key expert but will have a go!

Hi Hazel, I have now managed to upload the photos of the keys I dug up whilst metal detecting. A bit of insight about the location is I was walking through some woods next to my home in Yorkshire. After reading up about the area I found that these woods, even though well used by the public and are in a residential area, are actually Historic and date back to the 1100s.
I would really like to find out if they are old or if they are decorative type of keys used in homes as wall pieces etc. They are extremely heavy and the number 7 is stamped on the largest key, which for me seems to imply they were being used?
Would be great to get your thoughts or even advice on how to get these looked at for answers

For scale, are those one and two pence pieces in the first photo?

Never mind.

Best carry on key conversation in the new dedicated thread

Hi Alex, thanks for posting. How long are they?
From the little I know about keys it's possible that they are 19th century, if not later, (I've also seen some of those stamped with numbers), late medieval ones for example are usually a lot more rusted, and just have an older more misshapen feel, but it will in some part also depend on composition, the soil context etc. I'd recommend taking interesting finds down to your local museum, local archaeology group (you may find it very interesting to join one if you haven't already!), even your local university can sometimes be helpful with interesting finds, and getting some more solid help. All good fun! :)
