Lots of wood species like that, Kepis. They go from cheese to bone when they dry.
Fraxinus is ring porous. Decorator spoon or seal the pores so it does not fill up
with decomposing food juices and turn black over time like the bottom of a compost bin.
Looks like you thinned out the end of the handle stem.
That should feel really nice in the hand. Good design.
Just a thought- like you would steam a curved or bent stick to make a straighter walking stick; could you not steam a 'seasoned' spoon or other wood item you wish to carve thereby making the wood easy to remove/shape etc and so make it easier on your hands?
