Your cell system must be completely different to ours. Ours look for other providers for ALL calls if your provider isn't available. You just pay a "roaming" fee for calls if they go over another provider's network (but not if the cal is to 911) That said, if the phone says NO SERVICE it's because NO provider has anything within range; and that's quite common in the Western deserts and mountains. For that matter if you need the Coast Guard, you're likely to be farther off shore than a signal will reach (remember there are no cell towers at sea)

And by the way, he's wrong. 112 isn't a number that will work here as he stated.

I've never tried it but do 112 calls get redirected to 911?

Not to my knowledge. That would be the logical way for it to work. But what I'm saying is 112 wouldn't work here. The only way to be sure would be to try it but if it does work, I'd have to explain to the dispatcher. And possibly to the cop that shows up anyway just to be sure I wasn't being held at gunpoint when I told the dispatcher it was an accident.

I always thought it was EU thing and selected others. Didn't think US or Canada had it.

In UK we also have a 999 text service but you need to register. Although 999 & 112 are numbers that will get connected for free by any network in the UK even if the only signal is not your network. However, a text often gets through when a call doesn't. How many of you tried calling someone from top of mountain in a hoolie?!!

Thanks. That almost verifies that NO it won't work here. It states that it's the standard in the European Union and also on GSM phones. However GSM phones are, in and of themselves, a European standard and don't work here either.

It does state that the International Telecommunications Union "reccomended" North America adopt it but there's no indication that ever happened.

GSM

This service is mainly for the UK and Europe, the USA is still playing catchup in mobile networking;) but should still work although I'd dial 911.

Your first link is just a different URL to the same link JAG009 provided. The second one is interesting but to be honest those providers listed as using GSM aren't the best carriers for coverage (although they are very good if you stay within their service area) because there are VAST holes in service out West.

As to the US playing catchup you may well be right; but I suspect cell technology will likely be replaced by satellite technology before we ever really do get complete cell coverage. Frankly cell coverage will never be viable in the sparcely populated areas.

We're lucky in the UK and most of Europe in that mobile signals are to be had in most places without issue. Satellite phones are getting cheaper all the time but are really only any use if outdoors. I'll end up buying one, don't need one but I'm a soft touch for gizzmos's so I want one lol.

That's it isn't it? As the technology advances, the prices come down. As for them only being of use if outdoors, well isn't that the point of cell phones as well? I can still use my land line indoors.

I'll never give up my landline, has its own power so will often work in power outages. I can use my mobile indoors but like using a 'real' phone to be honest. I've got Android and Windows phones now but use about twenty minutes a month in calls, maybe send five text messages and download maybe 200mb of data so you could argue I'm wasting money but as said, I like gizmo's lol Waiting to get a Microsoft Surface Pro, again, don't need one but just want one and at my age sod it, treat yourself to a bit of what you fancy :)

I remember my dads old work mobile. He was working in an area with poor signal so got a mobile with a shoulder strap as it was bigger and than a home phone. It was mostly battery iirc to boost the signal. Decades ago. I think it looked like early satellite phones but now even they're like slightly chunky mobiles. Technology always moves on.
I remember signal oddities around angletarn pikes. No signal all around but a 10m gap with full signal strength, even got internet from there too!!!
