Made a start on making the sheath for the knife i built the other day, the sheath is made from Beech to match the knife scales.

Knife retention is by way of a rare earth magnet which ive glued in subsurface, it should be more than adequate to hold the knife in place as im not planning on using this as a neck or belt knife.

Just waiting on the glue to dry overnight and then tomorrow to the belt sander we go.

Is looking good so far - I have used magnets in the past to hold in sheaths and they work well ;)

Very nice indeed but I am curious- is the magnet flush or slightly recessed? I ask as I would be worried about the magnet scraping along the blade and leaving scratch marks! I’m sure you have already thought of that but can’t quite tell from the photo.

The magnet is recessed and is sub surface, the blade shouldn't touch it.

1. Glue-ups are always exciting = good things are about to happen.
2. When the blade is pushed and pulled past that magnet a number of times,
do you think there will be any change in the magnetic signature of the blade steel?

More than likely it will add some sort of magnetism to the blade over time, will be handy to find that needle when you drop it in the leaf litter i guess

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I do love a strong neodymium magnet, and have used them before in wooden sheath inserts.

Got the sheath finished off this afternoon, very simple styling which i think suits the overall build nicely;

and as i thought someone would ask how secure the knife is, i took this short video on my phone, its certainly secure enough for me

Been a really enjoyable build process.

Very nice. The magnet is a good idea, not sure I would have thought of that :( or worse I would have probably thought of it once I had the sheath put together.

Atb,
