I am very familiar with large whitbeam and rowan both bark and wood. You often see brown stained heart but I have never seen pink. Both wood, bark and tree look exactly Prunus sp. to me but as Davidn says a pick of the buds would help.

no buds to take a pic of as far as I could see guys. - I believe they are being cut down as they are all dead.

There were 4 more down today - and they had rather nicely cut off the huge burr I've been eyeing up for the last two years!
I can believe prunus (type of cherry?) - the bark is very similar to a couple of trees we have back home.

Still going with Sorbus, the horizontal marks on the bark are not specific to Prunus and shape of the branches and crown shape suggest Whitebeam to me. (I do spend a lot of my day hanging about in trees ;-).
