A friend of mine had some woodland in the New Forest. They felled an ash tree the other day and found it to be completely hollow all the way up. It looks like some Ivy has grown up through the middle and then rotted out leaving a holly up the length of the tree. I'm going to nab a few sections to play with as this should make an excellent fire chimney.

Obviously if you or your friend already has uses for it then all well and good but if it is just being used for the sake of using it then a suggestion would be nest boxes....a top and bottom on sections pop hole drilled in it and fastened back onto other trees would not only be appreciated by hole nesting birds but might also save other trees being 'holed' as nest sites.

Some of it will be used for that. My friend often takes her scouts there and that will be one of the projects. It's a big tree so I'm looking forward to seeing the different uses we can come up with.
