A good article. Current herbal repellants use bog myrtle and neem oil which may work better than the citronella mentioned in the article.

Most of the research has been done on mosquitos, especially the malaria mosquito Anopholes spp. Other biting insects like the Scottish midge Culcoides spp may respond to repellants differently.
