I have bought more than a dozen farrier's hoof knives, bashed off the stock handles
and hafted them in the common style of the Pacific Northwest native carving communities.
I've been really rough on those over the years, they are all surface hafted, by the way.
Nothing wiggles even now.

How long are the rat-tails? Your birch will be sufficiently hard as it is.
Carvers and turners often use CA glue as a wood hardener.
