Can anyone suggest a good source for woods for knifemaking. I'm sure that there must be a better source than the specialist knife suppliers where you are paying for a tiny piece of wood.
I got a huge amount of well seasoned oak from a chest of drawers that was being sent to the tip. I discarded the (treated) wormy bits and have handled many a knife from it.
I have bought (!) olive wood cheese board and salad servers for pennies from charity shops and have produced a couple of glorious handles from these. Some "firewood" I was given by a farmer included so mahogany posts, which is very attractive if a bit splintery, an old sofa gave me a good supply of beech (a bit boring) and my own trees have provided a bit of apple, sycamore and hazel.
Check out every skip you come across as I have found very nice bits of timber in these before and, dare I say it try your local recycling centre/tip - people throw away the most amazing things!
Depends what you want, how much, and what for. I have some Yew left, i can also get Oak, Ash, Cherry, Sycamore, Birch, Chestnut, basically all the native trees, and sometimes some others. Give me a shout, im happy to send you some if iv got what your looking for.
