This may be a stupid question to someone that knows. I brought some jute twine today and it's got me thinking what is it made of?? It smells slightly like deisel.

Jute.
As I recall, it's a fibre from India, and is soaked in oil when processed.
(Used to be whale oil, Dundee was a world centre for Jute production and whaling)

Ok fair play maybe I should have asked what is jute where does it come from. Is it possable to make without any special equipment. Has anyone had a try?

There's nice articles here, Ive used jute garden twine to make cord/thin rope.
Looks like its made by retting the fibres out, same way with flax. Doesn't look like its growable in UK though...
