My son wanted to go to the forest. He only told me this morning over a lazy late breakfast. 'Awesome' I thought. I put a bit of kit together into my rucksack and got some outdoor clothing on. We were putting on our boots when the wife told me I will be taking my daughter to her dance class after lunch. So, not wanting to let either of my children down, me and my boy jumped in the car and headed for the forest.
I decided that we wouldn't push too far into the trees, only enough to get away from the road noise. Despite being closer to some of the main tracks and fire breaks, it was a bit cold so I wasn't expecting to be disturbed.
So, in we go.......
After 15 minutes I found a nice spot and got the tarp up. It has been raining a lot recently and everything is sodden. I put down the JervenBag as a ground sheet.
I set about processing a dead standing pine limb. I guess this counts as the 'One Stick Fire Challenge' right......
Using a Laplander saw I cut the limb into knot free logs while the boy munched on an oat bar.
I batoned the logs into split wood using my knife. The pine was bone dry inside, but the limb had grown twisted which caused some not very straight splits.
The splits were feathered using a straight arm and my woodlore knife, while the boy looked on, still munching....
The feathers were laid on some split pine and lit with a fire steel. I quickly knocked up a pot hook and got a brew on. Time for hot chocolate and lunch.
The boy went exploring while I watched over the fire and mixed his hot chocolate drink. My phone rang and the wife needed my help. Time was cut even shorter as I now had to head into town for a little chore. With the water boiling I made up the boys hot chocolate and threw a pasta meal in the remaining water for us both. Ten minutes later it was ready. While he drank his chocolate I packed everything away, while the pasta cooled.
With time getting too short, I put the fire out properly and put the forest back to how it was before we got there. Shouldering my pack we walked back to the car.
But what about the pasta you ask....?
We had takeaway and shared it on the walk back!
