Been there done that

Trying to build up some bedding for a lean-to, it was coming out easily enough until one nearly sliced my fingers off. Hurt like hell too from what I remember.

Tried to break off a bit of reed by pulling at it in the assumption that it would break. What actually happens is that the surface layer slips off and ends up embedded in your finger. Very painful and lots of blood, and had to be removed with forceps as it had gone half an inch deep.

I was told by the nature reserve warden that this was the commonest injury on the site, although he did add "Normally it happens to 6 year olds"

Other plants that bite:

Nettles - they lean onto the path aiming for your hands
Brambles - whipsawing across your legs
Dog rose - whipsawing across arms and face
Giant hogweed - bites on any sort of contact
Grasses - they've got silica spines embedded in them to make them hard to eat, and the edges cut like a saw
Hawthorn - why is the gap in the hedge always guarded by hawthorn?
Blackthorn/sloe - massive spines that seem to aim to embed themselves under a fingernail

I have the scars to prove it too!
