It may be worth asking at a bike shop, if they do repairs and servicing, as the old stuff usually gets chucked.

JUST had a similar need myself

A bike shop in Edinburgh was selling cable at just under 3 quid for one
BUT
ASDA last night had a pack of 2 brake cables & 2 gear cables for 4 quid total..!!
If only I'd known this BEFORE going to the bike shop!!!

b&q sell 1.5 braided stainless cable from the roll - pretty cheap - its what i did mine with
