if there are any national parks near you im sure the ranger service would be pleased to hear from you.. you may have read in the news lately that there are now a bunch of new NP's designated but the same anual budget to share between then.. last week one (i forget which) became the first to announce redundancey's of their staff as the only cost cutting method avalible so im sure there would be work for those willing to do it for nothing.. its a good thing to have on your CV too!

As a Ranger for ten 10 years I have seen many volunteers come and go, volunteering is great if you have a clear idea of what YOU want, it's best not to be dictated to by the staff, have a think about what it is that you really want out of your volunteering. Practical conservation, Birding, Wildlife, Education, Recreation, some services will do them all, some only one or two, services differ greatly around the country. I would look at Local authority services, and the NGO's like English Nature, or the Wildlife Trusts. Again it really depends on what YOU want out of it.
PM me if you would like more info.
We have a volunteer service, and the vols get involved in most of the work that the Rangers do, but when I was a vol, all they let us do was patrol. Your just a little to far south for us :)
Cheers,
Mark
