Lime, probably the common hybrid that shoots from the base. Not the small leaved one.

If the leaves are 4-6 inches across could be the broad leaved lime mostly in the Wye valley, but I don't think this is that one.

This is the Common Lime - Tilia europaea

A very useful tree. The bark makes some of the best natural cordage, the young leaves are edible with a pleasant flavour. Dry flowers and young fruit and grind up to make a chocolate substitute. . The sap can be drunk or boiled down to make a sugar replacement.

Lime bark tea is a famous remedy - a sedative, laxative and expectorant.

:!: Older flowers used in tea have a narcotic effect. :!:

Why do you think I started this record Shewie? Its like everything else - easy when you know and impossible otherwise. My large heap of tree photos started with me photographing trees I didn't have a clue about and looking them up later!

Good point Red - I found these good fun and a good way to learn at the same time.

It`s one of my tasks for winter to learn more about my native species as I`m only really confident of a handful of the more common ones.

Winters a good time for I.D ing trees as you have to look more closely at them, Twigs and buds are more difficult to I.D the tree and also the trees shape without the leaves c an be more challenging. Fun though.
