Tree Recognition Challenge #12.5 (pic heavy)

Following on from Red's excellent series, here's another one.

Overall tree:

I would actually go for a Sargents Cherry. The base swelling on the trunk is typical of a swollen graft joint.

Leaces should come out dark Red, turn green and then go orangey red in Autumn. Flowers would be pink in early Spring.

I think its safe to assume its an ornamental cherry. But as to which one I don't know. The descriptions of Japanese and Sargents in my book are so close that it could be either.

At least its not a Sweet Chestnut

Seems to me that most, if not all, Cherry types often have a burgundy hue to the trunk and the lines appear to go round and not down the trunk.

It looks like a wild cherry Prunus avium or Japanese Cherry Prunus serrulata.

Thanks guys. I guess we'll have to wait until the spring, and see what the flowers are like. I'm convinced its some sort of flowering cherry now though.

I reckon it's a flowering cherry of some sort as it's planted in a urban landscape.
