[Hammock Hamster]

Right folks, just been past a tree surgeon who has said to pop back a bit later and he will save some limbs for me.

Any idea what this is and whether it's worthwhile for carving?

Might be a willow or possibly Eucalyptus - your nose should tell you which.

Willow will carve like butter, never tried Eucalyptus

Although it is equally possible that I am wrong on all accounts....

Hard to tell from that picture, but my guess is that is a Willow.

Closer shots of the leaves and seeds would help...

From the shape and colour of the leaves and the colour of the bark, I think its a eucalyptus of some kind. As has been said, let your nose guide you. The wood is fairly soft when green, but i have not tried carving any.

Good shout on eucalyptus bob, just been back with the car and picked up a load for the workshop, chap who was cutting it confirmed it.
Now to find some time to try it out and see how it carves.

Cheers fella, that doesn't inspire me with confidence but I now have about half a ton of the stuff so will try a few testers and see how infuriated I get with it! 🙂

That's a little more encouraging!

Have knocked up a quick tester spoon blank to see how it fairs, tucked away in a partly closed plastic bag with some fresh shavings for maximum chance of not splitting.

I think reports that say eucalyptus is good/bad/indifferent haven't quite got the whole picture - there are about 700 species of eucalyptus, some of which are used to make furniture, and some are soft and pithy so not much use for 'owt.

Lets hope you have one of the good ones
