Tree ID

I have a total mental block as to it ringing a bell of any sort and my ID books are buried somewhere!

Hopefully sufficient pics to ID, and not the often seen blurry pic of a bush.

Not an alder hybrid is it?

At first glance I'd say Nothafagus/Southern Beech.

Its not Alder, looks more like a Ulmus sp to me.

Possibly a rare Elm like Japanese or Siberian, but hard to tell.

It looks a bit like Caucasian Elm to me? I'd say it was Caucasian Elm.

Looking at the shape of the Caucasian I would say its not that, its a tuff tree to ID from photos.

Actually you're right, the shape is wrong.

You almost had me google searching for Tuff tree then, doh!

Popped back down the field to it to check for seed cases, catkins etc.

It looks a good match to me.

Looking at some other pictures round t'internet the bark looks like it could be way off but it could be those sources that are wrong. I need to do more research!

The plot thickens! They look like Elm seeds to me.

Its certainly beech with a seed pod like that.

Too many veins in the leaves to be an Antartic Beech (they only have 4 pairs). Still pretty sure it is a Roble Beech.
