An article on the beeb caught my eye. Steve Payne (retired Physics teacher), has walked from Southampton to Canterbury following a medieval pilgrams route. Sleeping in medieval buildings, or bivviing down under his cloak under trees when that wasn't an option.
BBC Article.

What's particularly interesting is the kit list given:

  • Cloak - a waterproof woollen cloak which weighs two stone
  • Soap - made from olive oil and wood ash.
  • Deodorant - a block of alum
  • Fire-lighting kit - flint and steel, horseshoe fungus and wood shavings.
  • Food - hard fruit loaf, nuts, dried fruit, honey oat cakes, boiled eggs, cinnamon spice, dried apples, water, ginger wine (non- alcoholic)

What surprises me most is the cloak. 28lb in weight for a cloak is *VERY* heavy.

Congrats to him tho.

Been following him on social media. The guy has my respect for what he has done, especially the issues he faced dressing the way he did. People not understanding what he was trying to achieve.

Good on him, eh? An interesting thing to do, although when I think on the temperatures we've had lately that weight of woolen clothing would have killed me in the daytime; very welcome at night, though!

Followed him as well. Great effort, pleasing that he met a number of really nice people as well.

What surprises me most is the cloak. 28lb in weight for a cloak is *VERY* heavy.

Just weighed one of my blankets and that came in at 1700grams or 3.7lbs so his cloak would be equivalent to having seven or so modern regular double bed size blankets sewn together. (FYI.. There's a nice video on youtube with Mors Kochanski where he talks about traditional trade blankets being three-quarters of inch thick with the outer layer being brushed like fur to shed water) Though heavy I reckon the load would be spread evenly over both shoulders and balanced front to back so it would not feel like 28lbs in a backpack does. Would sure be interesting to walk a mile & spend a night in his shoes.
