Given the grandiose name of this thread I hope people are as interested in what I am.
I'm a fan of what most would call "useless information" and for all intents and purposes it doesn't matter much at all most folk will know what your on about but given the nature of our shared hobby im sure most have an interest in history, so hopefully the purpose of this thread is to say what we have learned in this thread.
I'll start
String, cord, twine, line, rope, thread, cable, hawswer not sure if this should be included but yarn? Cord or cordage seems to be the same thing, anything you can use to tie stuff together with is cordage the singular is cord, I do not know the difference between string and thread other than I believe they are made using one strand on something that spins( distaff spinning etc)
Twine, is made by twining, essentially twisted right then crossed left creating a 2 stranded cordage of any diameter.
Rope has 3 strands which is term hawser laid, 4 strands shroud laid, 5 strands cable laid, this is where I have no clue is a hawser a 3 strand rope and a cable 5 strand.
Projectiles we are likely to use in bushcraft are lances, spears, harpoons, darts, arrows. As I was told a lance is a pointy pole that is thrust( doesn't leave the hands) a spear is thrown, a harpoon is thrown but is on a cord so you can haul it back, a dart is propelled via the hand, an arrow via a bow, and a bolt via a crossbow
Carving and whittling, carving is done with the tools used in both hands and the work may be held in a vice, whittling is where the work is held in one hand and the tool is held in the other. I'm not sure about turning but it seems a pole lathe you use the tool in both hands while the work turns, a modern lathe you may only use both hands to direct the machine to work.
I'm sure im wrong here but this is what I was taught so please tell me different. I don't mean this thread to be about names of stuff but the names of certain jobs etc
Don't ask about the difference between bushcraft, survival, primitive skills etc etc etc that question will never be answered lol
Anyway hand over your useless info
