I came across this sobering article in Outside magazine while I've been working on evacuation protocols for a new area I will be working in.

This is one reason why you need a sat phone and have to ensure that you have covered all stages of the evacuation so that no nitwit with a budget to protect tries to second guess your decision.

In my mind, there is no excuse for not having a fool proof casevac plan and the most reliable communications devices possible. Especially when leading an expedition. Sad story that could have been prevented.

A poignant reminder of the dangers of expedition travel, far from help. As Ross remarks, always have a totally secure emergency plan, and make sure everybody knows it. especially in areas where wild, poisonous, dangerous wildlife abound, Suitable medical supplies to cover every reasonable eventuality, and most of all the required training in how to use it.
A sad story, that could have had a different ending...
