redcurrants!

I went for a walk in my local patch of wilderness today, and found a redcurrant bush on the way back... it seems it has self-seeded and has a fair few berries on it...

I was just wondering what goes well with redcurrants? flavour wise
and if anyone has a favourite food/drink that uses them?

meanwhile, I will trudge through 4 Delia Smith books, 2 Nigella Lawson books and a Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall book!
(time for a ray mears cookbook for the shelf!)

not much venison round here in the butchers, but red currant jelly sounds good...
but the wine sounds better!
thanks for the inspiration

ahh thanks Rebel for the cordial link... I will try that

as for mousse... that is a good idea, I will see how many I have spare.
as for Ice-cream, my freezer is packed full of raspberry and tayberry ice-creams!

gonna pick 'em tomorrow and make it early,
then I can give some as a taster for friends when we go out for a meal + film at lunch!
(oh what it is to be a Uni student in holidays! well a gap year for me at least!)

Well,
I got to the berries yesterday, and this morning I made some cordial

200g of redcurrants made about a jam jar full of cordial
140g of sugar and 1/4 pint of water

the recipe was based on the one Rebel gave a link to

and it came out really well...
not too sweet or sour, and there is still some left!
the only problem is it did have a slightly odd aftertaste, which I think is due to the pips...

I think this recipe is going in my recipe book in the kitchen!

thanks for all the help, hopefully I can try redcurrant jelly and mousse next year!

I took my kids to a wood near the Chilterns and thought I'd found some Redcurrant bushes...not the clearest pic though...(is it?)

No fruit but found loads of raspberries to make up for it!

the leaves look similar, but I wouldn't say for definite...
maybe someone else can give a positive ID

maybe if you note it's location, next year it will have the berries on it and you can tell for sure

glad you found the raspberries!
