I noticed from a distance that this sheep's skull was crawling with some kind of beetle but by the time I got close enough to it to take a photo they had scurried underneath - you can just make out two circled in the photo.

Anyway, it turns out they are Red Breasted Carrion Beetles Oiceoptoma thoracicum. They don't actually eat the carrion themselves but feed of the grubs and maggots that do - the cycle of life (and death)
