Muthi: Exploring the medicinal flora of southern Africa
Olwen Grace, Country Officer for Plant Resources of Tropical Africa (PROTA)
explores the medicinal flora of southern Africa

Tropical Africa is home to more than 500 million people, most of whom depend
on plants for their everyday needs and well being. More than 7,000 higher plant
species, both wild-harvested and cultivated, are used by people in this vast
region of the African contintent. Knowledge of utility plants is indispensible for
rural development and habitat management, but information is often
inaccessible to users in developing countries where it is needed most. Olwen
Grace is Country Officer for PROTA (Plant Resources of Tropical Africa).

PROTA's aims are simple but ambitious: to provide a reliable information source
about the plant resources of tropical Africa, accessible to all who need it. This
lecture would be of specific interest for students and staff of the School of
Pharmacy and Biological Sciences and of general interest to everyone wishing
to improve their knowledge of African ethnobotany.
