PRI Infantry bergen

I've just bought a PRI infantry 45L bergen off ebay for a bargain price of £45, not being at all military I have a question.

What's the hard back plate for inside, is it just to give the pack structure? Also what are the two straps for inside, they're quite hefty straps and I can't work out their purpose.

Can get pics if needed but hoping somebody can help without them

The straps are for holding a radio. The back plate to protect the back from some of teh more angular bits if the radio

Back plate now gone, a quick slash with the SAK and it pulled out easily enough, the gaffa tape repair doesn't look too good though, must stitch it up sometime.

I've got a Karrmor version and kept the backplate in, might mod it with a zipper so i can add/remove as and when, i do love the pack though
