Uniqlo is a Japanese fashion brand, and not something I'd normally have considered as being outdoors-worthy, but after getting a lightweight stretchy T-shirt made by them from my g/f I discovered it made for a really good synthetic base layer.
Now, this probably (definitely, maybe) isn't on par with your more technical brands, but for someone wanting some cheap and cheerful down insulation for the winter you really can't go wrong at £59.99.
PS: The first colour you see is pretty awful, but the colour selection tool on the right-hand column gives you some slightly less eye-watering options.
