Does anyone know where to get powdered orange or lemon drinks similar to the ones in the British army raton packs? They don't actually taste that bad and help get rid of the purification tablet taste. Any help would be appreciated. :)

West Devon, Edge of Dartymoor!
don't know where to get it (except in a certain factory canteen in the Czech republic  ) but there's something called 'Tang' - I believe it's been mentioned on here before too - comes in 3 flavours : orange, lemon tea, and purple?!

or if you go into sainsburys they sell vitamin-c tablets that fizz and dissolve when dropped in a glass of water - just don't overdose on the vitamin C or you'll be sorry ;)

On a side note, I have heard that you shouldn't add the flavouring to treated water for at least half an hour after the puritab goes in as the vitamin C (I think) de-activates the purifying chemical

Most supermarkets do powdered Isotonic Lucozade now in large tubs. Some camping shops also do sachets but its quite pricey. I use a small shampoo bottle full of lemon juice or lime juice shich works well and is ahndy in a few recipes too :)

If you pm me your address, I will send you some from army rat packs, don't like the stuff myself, think I have 3 or 4 left and you are welcome to them.....

I have seen powdered orange lucozade(sorry about spelling) in Boots.
I bought the Lemon one and here's some info on it, the one tube I bought is only good for 2 litres and the dry weight is 468g. Haven't tasted it yet but don't think I'll be buying any more.

We used to get something from Tesco's, I'm sure it was called Apel or something like that, orange flavour - but having googled it I can't find it, does it ring any bells with anyone?

Hazer Baber Turkish Apple Tea from Waitrose or some such shop is good. Best hot but works ok cold, just takes a bit of stirring. Never seen an apple in it's life though. Mainly enumbers and sugar.

I always put a bit of that or a half a swig of cheap red wine in the water bottle, I find water that has hung about a day or so just plain nasty something a bit sharp makes it drinkable even if it is a bit stale.

Don't get it damp, you'll need a lump hammer to break it up.

Birds "Apeel" orange flavour, we used it in the Hospital I work in until last year, when it went out of production I believe

I still mourn the passing of Creamola Foam, remember it? One great thing that it had that these others don't is fizz. Very refreshing on a long hot day. :)

Lidl do a 'jar' at 99p I think it is - is a vailable in lemon, peach(I think) and wild berry (what we bought!)

According to the label you can make it hot or cold - I'll try some later and let you know ;)

wild berry is quite nice - tried it cold

My thoughts.....

  • It disolves easily
  • Is very light
  • dosn't have the 'dusty' taste some powders can have
  • is cheap! - 99p makes around 4 litres worth apparently (but I used it weaker than the reccomended quantity and it was plenty strong enough!)
Think I may go and get some lemon now! (think I'll prefer that but as it was a trial and swmbo drinks galons of apple and blackurrant it was a calculated risk ;) )
