Came across the following picture whilst rereading an old tracking book of mine. The image - along with the accompanying explanation - really helped me visualize the evolution of the foot from plantigrade through to unguligrade. As the image text says...the foot is marked in black.

The book is (A Field Guide in Colour to) Animal Tracks and Traces by Miroslav Bouchner from 1982.
