Hi folks.

Looking for some info on the right type of leather to buy/where to buy from for the top of a sporran/possibles pouch.

I inherited a wee bit and made my first sporran and have the urge to make more.

I found a dead couch today in nice antiqued brown leather which is quite soft and skinned it immediately!

Thanks in advance.

Try some 3mm veg tan leather. I'm not sure how much you want, but Tandy leather or Le Prevo are good for larger pieces. Apart from that you might try ebay for small cut pieces.

If you're looking at something comparable to the 'Dreadhead' style of sporran (which I believe is a development of a design put up some while ago by ozzhaggishead), I'd think that the 3-3.5 may be a bit too thick. My inclination would be to go for 2-2.5mm.

The Identity Store generally sell smaller pieces.

Cheers. Will look on the bay.

Is this stuff suitable?

Many thanks.

This would be a better buy: http://www.tandyleather.eu/en-eur/h...tooling-shoulders-bends-bellies/99606-01.aspx
You can tool and dye it as you need. It's a little lighter than the stuff I use in sporrans, but it will work fine too.

Depending on what size these work out at, you might get enough for a couple of sporrains out of them, since you generally need length rather than width in the pieces. They are dead cheap and you can mess around with them too. The leather does tend to thin out a bit towards the edges, but it should be ok to start with before buying premium stuff: http://www.tandyleather.eu/en-eur/h.../tooling-shoulders-bends-bellies/9080-99.aspx
