Hello I made a handle for an old, big and kinda unusual looking axe head today. I'm pretty sure it's a Hult Bruk axe (Swedish) but the only trace of the brand is a very hard to see "H". I gonna use try this as an carving axe! The handle is made from a special part of the birch tree called "svallved" in swedish which is considered to be very strong. Info about svallved you can find here: http://www.slojdeniskogen.se/materialen/svallved/ Judging on the weight of the wood and the way it responded when I carved it I think the rumors of it's strength are true. This piece of svallved should have been bigger but I think it will do for now. I can always make a new handle...

BTW what is that peg on the back doing there?!

I sharpened the bevel making it low angle on the left side and a higher angel on the right side as I'm right handed.

I've seen similar pegs on pig killers.
A hefty device for driving the blunt peg into the cranial cavity and killing the pig.
I'm sure its not the same device though as I'm talking very many years ago.
