Thanks for the replies. Is the pretext 6 anymore waterproof than the pretext 5?. I cannot get my head around the smock not being waterproof. Would you really go into "the wilds" wearing a smock that is not waterproof. I have seen some recommend a waterproof jacket over the top of the buffalo but surely this is layering?, something that the smock goes against with its "wear next to the skin" idea?

Pertex 6 is tougher and more abrasion resistant than Pertex 5 as far as I know. There is nothing against layering a special 6, so long as the additional layer goes on the outside.

I always wear a merino T or merino longsleeve base layer under my Special 6. I like to run cool when hiking and will often remove the S6 and hike in just the base layer, even in winter. In fact, for summer hiking when the S6 rarely comes out of the pack, I just have my merino T. As far as waterproofness is concerned if it's light or intermittent rain, or a short hike, I don't worry about a waterproof layer over the top, but heavy and persistent rain or long hike I will generally have a cag or my Jerven bag on top as my wind and waterproof layer - purely to keep some gear dry for when I stop.

I think it's a great bit of kit. Been using assorted Buffalo gear for 30 years or thereabouts...

It's intentionally not waterproof

The more waterproof a piece of material is the harder it is for water to pass through it, both ways. So if you're working hard in a waterproof you're likely to be wet inside from sweat anyway. There are fabrics that are better at this than others, and other technology (like paramo) which offers alternatives, but its a fair rule of thumb

It's why so many people, including me, use windshirts

The buffalo tops are good in light rain, up to medium rain. If you're working hard then you won't notice it. But they breathe incredibly well, so you'll not really be wet through with sweat unless its too warm to wear it (which unfortunately for me is way too often)
