I don't know the first one, but the second one is bistort, and it's edible :) It's used to make easter ledge pudding :)

the second is a Polygonatum (Bistort).

It's actually not Polygonatum - that is Solomon's Seal. It's Polygonum - it used to be called Persicaria, which is what I learned it as - hence my mistake. Bistort is right as a common name though.

Is the first one not sycamore?
I can see what you mean, but if you look closely at what little you can see of the stems it's definitely herbaceous, rather than woody, as even small trees tend to be. Also the leaves are showing more of a purple tone rather than the bronzey red of new Sycamore foliage. I'm pretty sure it's Japnese anemone.

A good bit of root is enough for a new plant; it's how I got mine :D
I grow it in a tub and it keeps it a bit like mint, not running rampant, iimmc.

cheers,
