Leather Tankard help

I have a Leather Tankard bought for me by my wife from the Jorvik centre. The black "Pitch" (I am guessing) is cracked and dry, it there any way I can fix this? I love drinking real ale from it and would hate to have to start using Glass!

You could maybe reseal with melted beeswax?

Run a hot poker over the surface of the pitch, just letting it melt a bit at a time to seal the cracks. Don't let the poker dig in deep though. You'll find it easiest with the tankard on it's side.
