Knives ive made this week.

This is couple of knives ive finished this week, one with birdseye maple scales one with spalted beech. http://swc-handmade-knives.com/--6 ............ Ive been experimenting with staibalising spalted timbers. Wood such as spalted beech can be very soft. After a lot of experimentation ive found that a mixture of epoxy resin dilluted with acetone (50/50) soaked into the wood until its saturated and left to set works a treat. It takes about a week to set. It makes the wood solid, and there is no swelling or shrinkage. It also anables a wonderful polished finish and does away with the need for oils and regular maintainance.

great knife. For hardening the beech wood (I have had the same problem) this guy here seems to have come up with an good solution. Obviously its too late for the displayed knife but for the next one...

Beautiful job. Are you using just the epoxy resin without the hardener to mix with the acetone?

Excellent! Very nice work! I wish I could make a knife, I couldn't make one with a kit! I have no tools, talent or patience!
