itunes/ipod help?

As some of you might recall my beloved son was sick on my last computer and killed it.
it had itunes on it with my ipod classic recorded on it.
i now have a new computer and haven't put itunes on it as i have had no call to do so until i recieved some cd's for my birthday last week.
i have been told by one friend that i will loose all my music as ipods are registered to only one machine:surrender:
a work mate tells me i can use it with a maximum of three machines.
which is true?
i want to add my new cd's to my ipod but i dont want to loose all the other stuff i have on my ipod as it will be a long painful process putting them back on
any advice or help would be really appreciated

You can redownload the stuff you've purchased from iTunes.

Was it a laptop or desktop that was ruined? The hard disk might still be OK & you can get the files off there

You can do it but it's not a straightforward process for any media that you have not purchased via iTunes.

This article here may help. Depending on how much you like iTunes and which version of iPod you have, you could use another method of syncing / copying music by using either WinAmp or MediaMonkey. I use Winamp and copy music to / from my old iPod 3 & phone easily - neither of these work with the latest iPod / Nano as Apple have changed the encryption method & how the content database is created / maintained.

you dont need to lose itunes music

uninstall itunes
plug in ipod
set to show hidden folders
browse to ipod in my computer
there is a big hidden folder that contains media
copy to desktop
install itunes
tell itunes to manage media folders so it creates artist/title folders etc, just easier that way
tell itunes to copy music when importing
import music from folder
sorted
any drm music may need to be redownloaded

did this a couple of weeks ago for a client and it worked a treat, dont use apple stuff myself so their may be a cleaner way

Is it an Apple computer you are using?
I use this bit of free software to 'manage' my ipod...

This will allow you to copy your iPod Music to your computer, you can then set up iTunes in the usual way.

There is probably a Microsoft or Linux equivalent.

Your old hard drive will probably have survived the 'sick' incident, so your music and everything else you had on it will still be recoverable one way or another.

"..the method described by neoaliphant that should do the trick i hope..."

Probably, good luck. :)

"...i havent lost anything from old netbook as i had backed it up on an external hard drive..."

I wasn't so much concerned that you may not have backed your stuff up, but was pointing out that ALL your stuff will still be on that damaged netbook for anyone who gets hold of it to access unless of course you had previously encrypted your drive or have since erased or destroyed it. If so, then ignore this. :)
