Now iv was given a dehydrator and vacuum sealer for Xmas and have bean researching what type of things I could do with it. I found this video and thought that this was a great idea. There's no washing up and all I would need to carry is my crusader kit or a billy can. What do you guys think? http://youtu.be/Tiynpc3wvos

I sometimes dry stuff like that, it works very well. You can do rice and beans the same way as he did pasta too, then it rehydrates in a couple of minutes instead of 15.

I really like his insulated pouch, that's clever.

Edited to add the title of a book that I like.

HHH has some really good recipes and methods. Another really good resource is http://www.trailcooking.com/

I've tried to copy a few US recipes but we just don't have the same range of ingredients over here, it's possible to try and substitute some bits but I never know if it's come out like it should.

Thanks for the link, lots of new ideas there to try

The HHH recipes don;t have many really exotic ingredients, but your comment is valid. When I lived just outside Liverpool, the markets had a pretty poor selection. When I left for London I was amazed by the improvement. If you are near a centre of Indian or Pakistani immigrants, you should be able to find more spices than you can shake a stick at. I still fall back on the truly excellent Complete Cookery Course, which launched Delia Smith more years ago than I care to remember. She has plenty of minced meat recipes such as Bolognese sauce, Chili, shepherd's pie, plus veggie alternatives(vegetarian shepherd's pie is a particular favourite of mine and is very suitable for dehydrating. BTW, just try finding ingredients for a half decent curry just about anywhere in the USA, which is where I live now. I usually find that you need to emphasize the seasoning/spices for a dish to be dehydrated, but not to the extent that it ruins it for eating when freshly made. Experiment, and enjoy.
