help with confidence and a Svord mod-job?

I intend to Autosol, vinegar patinate and rehouse my faithful svord. It currently resides in those nasty, black plastic scales.

What, cheapo wood scales can I use for a first attempt? I was looking at bamboo (as it's reasonable and environmentally friendly) but will I need metal liners?

The wooden Svord's peasants do not have liners so a straight swap for wooden scales should be ok.

I did mine with some oak flooring offcuts.
