Hammocks in winter

After reading the threads concering hammocks & group buys, I figure a lot of folk here must use hammocks! There's some pretty cheap ones for sale on evil bay at the minute, starting bid £19.99 & I've been contemplating asking my wife, mother-in-law, anyone, for one for Christmas. Seems like it beats laying down on the ground, but I get the sneaky suspiscion that cold air is going to circulate & freeze the proverbials! Is this a correct assumption, or would a decent sleeping bag cut out the cold air below, above & all around?! Any advice will be greatly received! Thanks all

Yohny, I can personally advise this, if using a hammock in winter its essential that you have an insulating layer(s) on bottom especially. I really endorse Henessy Hammock because they have a winter system thats hard to beat. However if you wish to use R.Mears eco sleeping system you'll need to have a skin or bag in the hammock. For additional comfort I usually hand my hammock low to ground over a coal bed for additional comfort. Not a open bed of coals but a coal bed (there is a differnce!) As for knots you only need a few to start here are the ones i'd recommend; Clove Hitch, Taughtline Hitch, Prussik Knot, Half Hitches. All of these are common and effective for most applications. But I plan to write an article on this anyhow..hope this help you out

Hey Brian. Really appreciate your help & advice. Probably won't be until after Christmas (that is if Santa's been good to me!). Incidentally, I wish I was able to come with you for the AT trip. It was something I always wanted to do know when I lived in the NC mountains & with quite a few other things now, is something I'll probably regret not doing!
