this website is really nice
With lots of maps, background data and major important prediction it has been very acurate for me the last year

http://www.severe-weather.eu/

the latest storm (and crazy wind), the very cold polar vortex (especially North US) in februari and also the extreme heat in later februari where are presented here in detail incl background info.

This site got some family members out of the Alps before the 2 meter snow fell and blocked the whole region.

Sounds more reliable than my Google home!

There's so much to the science of weather prediction. We've come a long way since Michael Fish failed to warn about a major storm and a tool like this is essential before making trips up Snowdon, Ben Nevis etc.

It's fascinating when you see it like that. Sometimes we scoff at science a little too much in the UK but these people are on top of their game. It's not just the computer modelling, it's those who write and interpret it. Total respect to those guys!

I've got a good friend in Kansas City right in the middle of that polar vortex so I know full well how extreme that weather was

Does the severe-weather.eu site only forecast significant events? Maybe I'm being thick, but can't see a standard forecast? In terms of a forecasting site it seems a little niche? The science side is undeniably interesting however.

sort of
Some major pattern is discussed first
then maps with the dates
then later the topic is repeated and refined following events in the atmosphere and of the actual weather.

Just try it out :)

Especially if some severe stuff is comming our way they warn and give data in advance.
The snow in late fall Italy and Austria was also spot on like 1.5/1 week in advance

Thanks for all these links everyone. I find Earth Wind Map really mesmerising.

Nice link. I like that. Many thanks.

I've found the UK Met Office weather app for your phone or iPad, etc. to be pretty good and accurate. You can save fave places, including popular peaks if you're into hill walking, and get a personalised forecast. Worth a look, at least.

Met Office is pretty good, I use that and Dark Sky. Dark Sky is sometimes completely on point with notifications like “rain starting in 12 minutes”, “rain stopping in 25 minutes” because it accesses the most local weather stations, even small ones intended for sailors in the Solent (Thorney Island) so it can be fairly accurate. Unfortunarly t’s now a paid app for iOS and Android, I got mine free when they first started.

For my needs, it’s often just a guide as to the best time to take the dogs out for a walk, or planning a weekend under tarp, I’m not hillwalking or mountaineering.
