Dear All,
Have looked over the forum an I can't find anything on this but excuse me if it is going over old ground.
I currently have a GB Mini Hatchet and was looking to get something ith a bit more chopping power.
I realise everyone raves about the GB SFA, but has anyone tried the GB Hunters Axe. It looks similar in dimensions to the SFA but has a design more similar to the Mini Hatchet that I have been very pleased with.
Any thoughts?

Rob.

I own a SFA and a mini and have used the hunters axe. I am not keen on the roughened handle on the hunters axe i used. I'm sure it improves grip when covered in body fluids but i found it led to blisters when used for a long time. The poll is nice though although again its a compromise. What is your intended use. Overal the SFA and the hunters are both nice bits of kit with the SFA being a bit more of an all rounder. IMHO

I have an SFA and a Hunter's. Well I think it's a Hunter's; it's identical to the picture but I got it very cheap at a car boot sale. :?:
It's a brilliant axe - the "flay poll" (rounded polished poll) is surprisingly good for skinning. If you don't skin big game however then I'd go for the SFA, as Wayne says it's a better all rounder.

That's why I love my Wetterlings. Great grip and so far no blisters. Arm ache yes, blisters no. Fantastic piece of kit.

Cheers Gary, best bit of kit I bought from you.

Thanks for the advice. The axe is for general bushcraft use so I guess I'll join the SFA masses.

As an additional point, if you take the dimensions in Mors Kochanski's 'Northern Bushcraft' the Scandinivian Forest should be the most suitable. Is that because he is more dependent on an axe than we might be in the UK?

I have got the Scandinivian Forest Axe and the Wildlife Hatchet. The big ones great for chopping and splitting good sized logs. :eek:T:
The small ones good for splitting kindling, feather sticks and carving.

Here they are:

the benefit of the Hunter's is the straighter handle and shorter blade which makes it more accurate - and slightly stronger.
If a person doesn't like the grooves on the handle, they can be sanded down.
