I had a nice length of ash that would have been ideal for scaling material, but was way too thick and figured I could get a good few lengths from it. Today I took it in to work and had a walk downstairs to the engineering shop as I know they have a decent band saw (my little scroll saw wouldn't handle it) now a warning people to be specific!
As I've been told off for using the factory equipment before because I'm not insured I asked gaz the engineer to thin it down for me and slipped him 4 cans in way of payment.
"No bother Mick leave it with me mate, I'll nip them up to your office after last bait"
I returned to these, a good few of.

Looks ok right? Perfectly uniform and well finished for a sawn edge... Then I picked them up!

Maybe he went a little TOO thin! If nothing it's given me a good laugh and some kindling. Sure he had good intentions and he did in fairness thin it down lovely :lmao:

If I had those pieces I'd be straight into laminate bending with steam - there's loads of great and useful stuff to make and it's pretty easy to get set up and running, although folk seem to find it daunting...................

And Ash just happens to be superb for bending! Loads of stuff on youtube for ideas.

Wallpaper steamer in a drainpipe suffice macca? Seems a shame to burn it in honesty.

He's done a good job indeed! Thinner than the blade.
Might well laminate it actually, got some mahogany and black walnut there might ask him to do the same thing!

Yeah, steamer and pipe is all you need; I've bent fairly thick stick handles of Yew like that and Yew takes a lot more than Ash. With laminating you can build up thickness to whatever you like by making a simple ply former, then do your laminate/gluing in whatever order and timescale you like - you only need to steam the next piece/pieces to go on there, the bulk of work already done can wait as long as you like, giving plenty of time to play with ideas as you go or indeed to change and adapt designs on the fly. A very flexible way to work.

Might just do that! Ash any good for bows?

I think it is very good for bows, Dwardo of this parish is your man for all things bow-ie though, I've never made one. One thing I'd definitely be looking at if I had that timber would be lightweight wooden sheaths and containers, I thing that sort of stuff looks and works great, and the other thing Ash has going for it is that it takes a stain better than almost any other wood and that adds another dimension to it all. We rarely see stained or coloured woodwork on here but it can look stunning.
