Thought i'd have one last go (for the time being:rolleyes:) at one for me that i'd be happy with. Using local woods and bark to me with some bone and Nickel Silver plate.
The blade was forged out by me from an old G.Barnsley Rasp/file found in an old workshop, so there's different teeth marks on either side, even after reducing the thickness from 7mm to 4mm.

Hope you like so here we go :)

Forging out the tang, reducing to a uniform thickness and shaping the tip and staightening, with hammers. It was a warm day too without the fire!

The origonal rasp I cut in half when hot with a cold chisel. The unworked half is in the pic next to the rough forged blade. I love stretching them out. The rest I ground out including the bevels as im not that clever yet.

It was hot, but I do like my tea and it was as quick to boil up like this :D

First round of spacers cut out and ready. including the buffallo bolster, which I wanted to shape into a slight guard this time.

And here she is, please excuse the photos, as it began to rain this morning and I had to duck under the wood shed for some.
It would have looked better with the traditional slope on the end of the handle but I find they lodge in my ribs when doing the chest leaver grip, one I use a lot and also the handle has to be very long to get the hand comfy in the grip too with rear guards. Mind i'm never settled on handle shape for my personel knives.

Ash for the main peice, with Birch Bark, Birch Burr, Various leathers, buffalo horn and Nickel silver, with a nail head on the end of the handle with an attempt at a makers mark. Blade 95x25x4mm approx, Handle 120mm long.

Wow that is beautiful work! I really love the effect of the three birch bark layers. How thick are they and how do you get them to lie flat without splitting?

I have a few old files and was looking for inspiration. Now where's that thread on cheap to build forges...

That is Bloody lovely....
the handle and blade are perfectly proportioned to my eyes.
I really like the marking on the blade...bit like Damamscus....I may use file as stock for my next one ;)

Forgot to state the reason I originally wanted to post, duh! Was going to say I really like the contrast of the ash compared to the darker bits and it's nice to see the nickel silver spacers used instead of brass. Nothing wrong with brass but personally I prefer silver, purely for aesthetics. Very nice!

Very nice Mr A, your best one yet! Hopefully you'll be 100% happy with this one (but I know what its like...)

:):):)

Looking forward to seeing you (and it) at the w/e

That's my favourite part of the knife too. I just find the thickest bark I can in the best condition, ie a recently felled/fallen tree or an old one in decent condition. Its just over 1mm thick on this knife, with nice dark markings.
To work with the bark just flatten when damp between kitchen roll and heavy flat weights, in my case books. When you cut the pieces observe how it splits and be careful with how the cuts run.

Thanks for all the great comments all :)

Thanks again, just added two more pics. Just made a cracking feather stick with it too :)

That's a beauty mate. The blade is superb in its own right. I love how you can see where the teeth have been. Looks like fish scales. Excellent knife.

Very nice Addo, I think a wooden sheath will look propper smart with that one mate.
Nice work with it, love the finger guard and the blade looks very nice.

Cheers again. Its just survived a spot of bushwhacking this weekend and the edge is working well. Think I'll slim down the handle a bit, but apart from that I'm quite chuffed with it.

Might have to have a butchers at your sheath next time we meet, as I remember it being rather tasty. Saw the little sewing kit you made for scruff, nice work dude.
