Can anyone suggest a good flashlight for use in the woods and paddling? Should not be too big and ideally some waterproofing to it. I like the look of the fenix brand but do not know much about them.

I currently use headtorches (which I will continue to use) but want a light that has got more throw and brighter.

Thanks for your suggestions

Personally, since all threads descend into arguments, I suggest calling it a torch :)

However Fenix are the best "bang for your buck" brand name I have tried. I have one that runs on a single AA battery - its small, light, bright and cheap.

But its a torch ;)

BR - can you tell me which fenix "torch" you have?

I missed the torch/flashlight reference:confused:

I got the Fenix L2D fairly cheap from somebody on the forum. Superb build quality and it knocks out a great beam.

A "flashlight" comes in different colors (sic) and is stored in a "fanny pack"

A torch comes in a variety of colours and may be stored in a bum bag ;)

Mine is an original model L1T - super thing. I believe the later versions are better still but I'm happy with mine :)

Thanks - bit slow on the uptake - well it is late:rolleyes:

Last year I bought a Fenix P3D and a 10 pack of batteries from the The Photon Shop, here, from whom I received excellent service and a good price.

There was also a very bright Photon keyring light included as a gift, and I was later (to my surprise) sent a Fenix knife following the completion of a Fenix Customer Survey.

The P3D is a Light Sabre!

215 lumens in a small size, strobe, SOS, variable light output, all available at a click, its an excellent torch, beautifully made. I bought mine to clip to my helmet when paddling through tunnels, the rest of the time, it lives on my belt.

And yes, it really is 'torch!'

BMW cars used to come with a torch recharged from the battery but since they introduced the new intelligent battery system it just no possible, so they give away a wee 1aaa torch with every car, its a single led with a lens and is the best wee torch i have ever seen, its all o-rings like the maglites so i would think its water resistant like the mag-lites as well.

Only problem is they aint cheap, you get a BMW with them :-D

Where are they Johnny, still in the glove box ?

I've got a couple of test drive loans coming up in a few weeks so I'll see if they've already been had.

moab, do you find that using a headtorch when paddling attracts insects to your face/head?

hi moab
why not try a maglight
I got several going from a pen size tirple AAA going to a 5 d cell beast
never had any probs with them and had them for years the 2 cell double A size is good and you now can get a led converstion kit for them.
with plenty of addon's too

Battery type is worth taking into consideration. I bought a Nitecore Extreme with the R2 led in it. It runs on CR123A batteries and is an awesome lumen monster for such a tiny thing. It may be that you want to run on AA as they're readily available, but there tend to be a drop in brightness, although they're getting better. I like a clicky switch also, so decide if you want a clicky or a twisty TORCH.

Does it need to tailstand for roomlighting? The Nitecore doesn't, but most Fenix do.

The Quark torches from 4-Sevens are getting good reviews and the prices include shipping:

Here's my Nitecore, available from Flashaholics:

Got it's party clothes on!

I try to be off the water before I need a headtorch - would be like landing lights for the flying insect community though:D

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions ( and education about terminology:D ), at the moment my torch of choice is the fenix tk10 and will be dipping into the old paypal account soon.
cheers

I have this Novatac EDC 120E
edc-pic.jpg

Waterproof 66 feet (20 meters), very handy flashlight, robust and solid. Runs on one CR123A battery.
White LED
• 3 Preset Brightness Levels
• Primary Setting: 10 Lumens
• Secondary Setting: 42 Lumens
• Maximum Setting: 120 Lumens
• Preset Emergency Strobe Signal
• Extended Button
I can for sure recommend it.
(I also like those Fenix flashlights, I have the the P1D, a great little thing, but not waterproof as Novatac.)

I like the iTP torches, especially the C9. Not too expensive, yet very high quality (surprisingly high quality considering its origin). If you'd prefer AA batteries there's the C7 and C8 models. All of these get you something like a maximum of 190 lumens. The C9 is compact and can really take a bang. I carry one in my pack / pocket frequently while hiking, fishing, etc. CR123A batteries may be an issue for you. I just stock up and take a bunch with me. They're small and light.

Hi There,

Sorry i never noticed you post, yes they are in the glove box, not the crappy little plug in ones, its a small grey cylindrical one, they are only really in the m-power and 6 series so test drive something decent!!!!

Kind Regards

John

TK10 on its way - if it gets past the postal blockage though.

Must say I never realised the breadth of torches that were out there - glad i took some advice.

Thanks
